Liam Lawson reflects on Red Bull axing

Liam Lawson has opened up about his early season Red Bull axing after scoring his best-ever finish in Formula 1. The 23-year-old came home an impressive sixth in a chaotic Austrian Grand Prix after a determined and measured drive at the Red Bull Ring, in a race that saw only 16 finishers and a number of frontrunners — including Max Verstappen — retire early. Most impressively, Lawson was one of just two drivers to make a one-stop strategy work in the scorching Styrian heat, holding off the experienced Fernando Alonso in the closing laps to secure eight valuable championship points and the best result of his F1 career. “It’s been a very, very tough race,” Lawson told Sky Sports F1 after the race. “I don’t even know how I survived it, to be honest.” The New Zealander was nearly taken out on the opening lap at Turn 3 after Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli misjudged his braking and came flying into the corner. Max Verstappen “not happy” after Liam Lawson exit

According to Helmut Marko, Max Verstappen is “not happy” with Red Bull’s decision to replace Liam Lawson after just two race weekends. Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko has revealed that four-time champion Max Verstappen is “not happy” after the team decided to drop Liam Lawson ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix. After just two race weekends of his rookie Formula 1 season, Red Bull announced that Lawson is moving back to its sister team Racing Bulls, and Yuki Tsunoda will be taking the spot alongside Verstappen from the Japanese Grand Prix onwards. The Milton Keynes squad assessed both Lawson and Tsunoda in the latter stages of the 2024 season to decide who would replace Sergio Perez in the team for 2025. Despite the Japanese driver’s four-year experience in Racing Bulls, they opted to sign Lawson, citing his ability to consistently perform under pressure. Five race development plan for Red Bulls Lawson

The Australian Grand Prix didn’t go to plan for Liam Lawson but Helmut Marko won’t pass judgement on the Red Bull rookie until he’s completed “three to five” races with the senior team. Promoted to Red Bull for the F1 2025 championship after 11 Grands Prix with the junior team over two seasons, Marko made it clear before the campaign that Lawson’s job was to “help” Max Verstappen win the titles for Red Bull. Alas, Race One didn’t go to plan. Lawson was knocked out in Q1 at the Albert Park circuit after aborting his final flying lap in Q1 when a wayward moment through Turn 10 was compounded by a slide at the penultimate corner. Down in 18th place on the grid and with rain forecast for the Grand Prix, Red Bull bolted a different specification rear wing and rear beam wing onto the New Zealander’s car but it came to nought. Honda distances itself from Tsunoda

The manufacturer has clarified that Tsunoda is “fundamentally an independent driver” with sponsorship from Honda, and that it no longer needs to negotiate deals for him. If Yuki Tsunoda and his new management were hoping to receive a helping hand from Honda as Tsunoda builds a case to remain in Formula 1, the mood music coming from HQ isn’t promising. As a member of Honda’s driver programme, Tsunoda was fast-tracked through the European junior single-seater ladder, making his F1 debut in 2021 with the team then known as AlphaTauri. At the time it was politically expedient for Red Bull to take a Honda-supported driver since it was trying to keep the manufacturer engaged in F1 after an expensive spend to reach competitiveness – and much bad PR during its abortive comeback with McLaren. But now the landscape has shifted: Honda is realigning itself with Aston Martin, Red Bull is pivoting back towards building its own engines, albeit with Ford sponsorship, and Tsunoda is entering his fifth season in F1 having failed to convince Red Bull he is worth promoting to partner Max Verstappen in its senior team. Honda Helps Yuki Tsunoda twists Red Bull’s arm to test F1 car

Yuki Tsunoda has thanked Honda for pushing Red Bull into giving him a test in their F1 car. Despite being within the Red Bull family since 2021, Tsunoda has rarely been mentioned as a serious candidate to be Max Verstappen’s teammate. This season he outperformed RB teammate Daniel Ricciardo who has now been replaced by Liam Lawson. Yet, Lawson is more regularly touted for the Red Bull drive than Tsunoda. But Honda – the Japanese manufacturer who back Tsunoda and are partners of Red Bull – have interjected to request a test drive. “It’s a very good opportunity,” Tsunoda said to Motorsport. “At least I finally can show a bit of my driving and they just can see how I’m driving. “I think it’s very important.
